Self-Storage Goes Hollywood!

At first blush, the topic of self-storage doesn’t seem to be a glamorous one. After all, we’re talking about people keeping their excess belongings in a safe place in situations where they might not have to room to keep them at home or their place of business. It’s a pretty cut-and-dried process.

Nevertheless, storage units have been featured (in various degrees of prominence) in many different films and TV shows over the decades. For example, in the hit series Breaking Bad, Walter and Skyler white use a storage unit to safeguard their giant pile of cash. It’s literally a cube of cash that measures at least six cubic feet in space. Storage units have also been showcased in shows like True Detective as well as films like Citizen Kane and Monster

For our purposes, however, we’re going to tell you about five different films — all of them horror films — in which self-storage is prominently featured. Some of these movies are better than others, but in all of them, there simply wouldn’t be a story without our old friend, the storage unit.

The Hoarder – In this 2015 film, the main character thinks her boyfriend is having an affair because he is renting a secret storage unit. When she sneaks into the facility to find out what’s going on, she finds herself getting locked in. And then bad things happen…

Storage – This appropriately-named Australian film is about a teenage boy who goes to live with his uncle after the death of his father. The uncle runs an underground storage facility in Brisbane, and that’s where the boy runs into a creepy man. Things only get weirder from there.

Self Storage – This title is right on the nose. It’s a 2013 film set in Rhode Island and starring Eric Roberts. He plays a security guard at a storage facility and decides to have an after-hour party with friends on the premises. Mayhem ensues.

Storage 24 – A military plane crashes in London, stranding a dangerous alien creature. The alien hides inside a 24-hour storage facility and starts killing off the customers. You know, just like in real life.

The Silence of the Lambs – This is probably the most famous use of storage in the movies. At one point, Dr. Hannibal Lecter sends young FBI candidate Clarice Starling on a search for the killer Buffalo Bill, which leads to her breaking into Your Self Storage in search of clues. Of course, while there, she winds up inside a 1931 Packard containing, among other items, a headless mannequin and a human head in a jar.
